About bookoxygen
bookoxygen is a place to celebrate writing and writers, in particular novels and novelists.
It’s a site where interesting new writing is aired and appreciated, chiefly through the reviews of industry professionals – writers, publishers, journalists. It’s also a place for writers to discuss writing, and for readers to sample extracts of published work, selected for quality and variety.
bookoxygen was dreamed up in February 2012 and launched in April of the same year. It is the brain child of Elsbeth Lindner whose experience in the book business over some forty years has not dimmed her delight in discovering a good book.
bookoxygen also has a mission to help correct the imbalance in book journalism which sees some sixty percent of literary coverage written by men and devoted to male writers. At bookoxygen, the coverage is weighted sixty percent or more in favour of women writers and critics.
In addition the site seeks to give space to smaller publishers who can struggle to gain their share of review column inches even at a time when independent houses are publishing some of the most interesting new writing.

I have just read the review of the book Marie Curie and Her Daughters. Having read it for newbooks, I can thoroughly recommend it. A little ‘God bless America’ in tone, but otherwise enjoyable. I am sure teenagers would enjoy it as much as their parents. An inspiring story of how Marie achieved two Nobel prizes, but at a cost to her life and health which she sacrificed for science.
I have now finished The Confidant but I am sorry to say that I still think it lacks cohesion and, although a fascinating idea, it somehow just misses out. Perhaps the translation or just the rather too disjointed narrative. A pity.
Thank you for The Confidant. I am enjoying it with reservations. Interesting idea but difficult to follow. It seems to me to lack cohesion and the translation is, at times , a bit clunky. However I will comment again when I have finished the book.
Received The Confident 3 days ago and finished it this morning. Kept me guessing until the end. I found the book quite unsettling because as soon as I thought I knew what was going on a new twist was added to the story. A very good first novel and I will be watching out for her name in future. If I had time I would definitely read it again.
I just received ‘The Confidant’ by Helene Gremillon after joining the inner circle. Thankyou , I can’t wait to read it and look forward to staying on this sbookoxygen!
Read about the site on NewBooks so joined immediately and received my book this week. It is The Invisible Circus by Jennifer Egan and I am already half way through. For a debut novel the writing is amazing and although I have two books I need to read in the next month I have to finish this one first. I love the website and will be encouraging members of my reading group to join.
thank you,
Elsbeth
Thanks so much for the free book which I haven’t got around to reading yet. Just wanted to say good luck with the siteand I am looking forward to the market research.
Best Wishes
Cynthia
I am loving this website and look forward to reading the book reviews every day. I found out about this site from being a NewBooks reader and am impressed.
I recently joined the Inner Circle and you sent me a book by Rachel Simon called “The Story Of Beautiful Girl”, which funnily enough was in my long list of books to read. It was such a moving and yet heart warming story- many thanks.
I can’t wait to start reading for the Inner Circle.
A great site. Wishing you lots of luck with it.
Congratulations on a truly great website. I have seen the ‘What happened next’item in the latest edition of ‘newbooks’.
